Pumpkin Run Nationals Awards

One of my hobbies (when i can find some free time) is a restored 1966 Mustang GT. Several years i joined a car club, the Fastiques Rod & Custom who produce the Pumpkin Run Nationals each year.  This year was the 36th annual event.  We average about 3000 cars and trucks from around the country which are 1970 or older each first weekend in October. Since we are a non-profit organization any money that we do make from the event goes to various charities.  Our major charity is the Shriner's Burns Hospital for Children. Like many years before, we were able to once again present them with a check for $50,000.

Digital 101 Lesson 9

did you know that many if not most prosummer dslr cameras had a crop factor?  this is because their sensors are smaller than a full frame sensor which would equivalent in size to a 35mm negative.  the average camera has a "C" sensor that magnifies the focal length of the lens by 1.6.  the other popular sensor is the "H" that has a crop factor of 1.3.  what's it mean?  if you had a 50mm lens (considered normal on a 35mm film camera of full frame sensor) it would magnified by the crop factor of the type of camera that you were using.  a 50mm would become a 80mm with a C sensor.  this great for sports but becomes a little awkward in tight quarters.  another problem is the slowest shutter speed that you can safely use hand held before creating body movement.  the general rule is 1/the focal length of the lens.  1/FL  in the the case of the 50mm, 1/50 or 1/60.  jump to a 200mm telephoto and it becomes 1/200 or 1/250.  remember that crop factor?  the 50mm is a 80mm on a C or a 65mm on a H camera.  the 200mm now becomes either 320mm or a 260mm depending the camera and would require an increase in the shutter speed.  bottom line, the longer the lens, the faster the minimum shutter speed required without the aid of a tripod.

I'm Still Here, Just Busy

Just finished doing dance photos at Linda Krumme's Gotta Dance Studio.  As you can see, Hannah can fly and have a good time as well.  As far as I'm concerned it's the best school in the city for dance.  In between doing dance photos I have been doing an amazing amount of commercial photography, the weddings are in full bloom and ball photos are just starting up now that it's dry.  If you are into photography, I will be starting a new photography class at UC, Clermont in a couple of weeks and i believe that there may be a couple seats still open.

Digital 101 Lesson 8

This time of year it is a good idea to carry a large zip lock bag with you if you intend to carry a camera.  Condensation could form on the lens and even the inside of the camera from transporting it between a warm environment and a cold rainy one.  Place your camera in the bag and zip it up so that the condensation forms on the bag instead.  I would also recommend a using a UV or Skylight filter over the lens for added protection.

Another Friday Night, Another Beautiful Bride

This pre wedding exposure was made in a hallway.  The lighting accentuates the dress and her face.  A little vignetting was added to down play the background.  The main light was in another hallway to her left using a large white satin umbrella.  The fill light was bounce light from a camera attached strobe.  The net effect is a beautiful 3:1 Rembrandt ratio.

Where did the time go?

Wow it's October already.  It is time to start thinking about family Christmas photos to send out to friends and family.   if you hurry you might be able to get an outdoor session before the leaves fall.  Let me suggest jeans with either navy or burgundy for fall colors.  Don't until there is frost on the pumpkins, give us a call.

Digital 101 Lesson 7

did you know that working on any image in Photoshop always check your work at 100%?  also it is best to reset the foreground/background color to default (black/white) before applying most filters.  in many case the effect will be altered by the foreground color selection, often not for the best.
most of my students don't know about the "Revert" command under the FILE menu.  revert does just that, reverts the image to either it's original open condition or it's last save.  most people today wade through the History window.  that works but Revert cuts to the chase especially when the History pallet isn't open in your work space.

Off to a great start...

how can you not make beautiful images with subjects like these ladies?  believe it or not, some photographers actually get models or former brides  to POSE for their wedding samples or competition prints. as you can see, i don't need to. real people, real location, created in real time.
